UK’s First In-House Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Service Launched in Sheffield

R S Bruce & Son Ltd has launched the UK’s first in-house lithium-ion battery recycling service, marking a major step forward for the country’s sustainable battery management.

Over the past several months, the company has invested in state-of-the-art equipment, a dedicated facility area, and skilled personnel to offer a full-service solution for recycling lithium-ion batteries.

The launch comes as the UK Government pushes to decarbonise road transport, phasing out petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030. The increasing number of electric vehicles on UK roads, boosted by government incentives for electric vans, has created a growing demand for domestic recycling solutions.

The new service involves carefully dismantling lithium-ion batteries and processing them to extract metals and precious materials. These recovered resources can either be sold into other industrial processes or recycled. R S Bruce & Son has already been successfully recycling lithium-ion batteries from laptops and mobile phones, but this expansion represents the first full-scale UK facility capable of handling larger batteries.

Currently, many UK businesses export their lithium-ion batteries to Europe and other regions for recycling, which adds high transportation costs and a significant carbon footprint. By recycling batteries.
